-Description-
Benfotiamine is a fat-soluble derivative of thiamine and has higher bioavailability than thiamine. However, Benfotiamine must be dephosphorylated by alkaline phosphatase to become a fat-soluble precursor before it can cross the cell membrane to produce biological effects. Clinical mainly used for the treatment of diabetic complications, especially for treatment and prevention of diabetic retinopathy. Compared with other thiamine derivatives, this product is absorbed more rapidly and completely after oral administration. After absorption into the systemic circulation, phenylphosphothiamine is rapidly metabolized to thiamine without increasing the concentration of the drug in the brain. It also produces hippuric acid and is excreted in the urine.
Benfotiamine is a fat-soluble analogue of vitamin B1 with a higher absorption rate and bioavailability than vitamin B1 and is commonly used as a food supplement for complications of diabetes. Benfotiamine has direct antioxidant capacity and can prevent DNA damage.
